Masingini Forest
Welcome to Masingini Forest – an oasis of peace and tranquility that is so much more than just beautiful beaches and clear waters! Situated just outside Stone Town and easily accessible, Masingini Forest is the perfect destination for nature hiking amidst ancient trees while chattering monkeys play overhead.
The forest gets its name from the many “masingini” or gullies created by its more than 35 gorges. It covers an area of 566 hectares and is located on the highest peak of Zanzibar, standing 120 meters above sea level. Established in the 1950s to protect water sources and soil, Masingini Forest today plays an integral role in supplying water to the city of Zanzibar, as it holds large deposits of groundwater. Its deep, nutrient-rich soil provides a lush habitat for a wide variety of exotic and rare plants.
In terms of fauna, Masingini Forest is home to some of the rarest species on the island, including the endemic red colobus monkey. The forest is also home to small mammals, snakes, reptiles, and a host of other fascinating creatures. So, if you’re looking for a peaceful and unique experience in Zanzibar, look no further than Masingini Forest.
