Stone Town
From your pick-up in Stone Town, we’ll travel to a local spice farm for an intimate tour. You’ll get to smell and taste different spices and seasonal fruits that are grown in Zanzibar and learn how they are cultivated and used — not just in Swahili cuisine, but also in medications and beauty products.
You’ll then head to a nearby village by car (about 5 minutes). Enjoy a short walking tour of the village, to see how the houses are built and learn how local people live. It’s here that you’ll meet a local woman who will show how she cultivates cassava — you can test out your own skills as an African farmer! Together, you’ll collect some cassava leaves, then head to her home for a hands-on cooking class in her outdoor kitchen.
The vegetarian sauce we’ll make requires first making coconut milk from fresh coconuts, which is the base of many Swahili foods. We’ll then cook the vegetables and once everything is prepared, you’ll get to sit down and enjoy your delicious lunch outside.
